A 64 year old man is brought to the Emergency Department after
collapsing in a seafood restaurant. His wife tells you he has had a
previous anaphylaxis to shellfish. His pulse is 145 bpm and BP 72/50
mmHg. He is short of breath and only responsive to pain.
The World Allergy Organization defines “anaphylaxis” as an acute, potentially lethal, multisystem syndrome resulting from the sudden release of mast cell and basophil-derived mediators into the circulation.
